On the move
Well its finally over and I am glad it is with the winter soon upon us. It's just no fun moving in the cold. With that the Montuoro Guitar Co has relocated the shop. My wife and I are the proud new owners of a 1920 Prairie style brick bungalow in the heart of a historic Chicago district. Being a cottage industry and a one man operation I have longed for a home where I can properly run my business. And keeping it in the family is where it's at. Here we are for many years to come I am sure. And keeping with one of my greatest loves. Old things!
We just got back from a trip to the Martin guitar factory. It was a really inspiring trip for me. Getting to see for the first time where it all started. In visiting the 1859 shop I was reminded of my own. A small humble brick building that eventually for Martin turned into a huge empire. For me that may never be the reality. But what is similar is the drive and inspiration that comes from believing in yourself. It reminds me of a time when the American dream was at full tilt. When craftsmanship was at one of it's highest levels. When behind simple but sturdy brick walls big dreams are designed and built.
I am the first to admit that I just simply love old things. Guitars, furniture, houses etc. I truly feel that the guitars that will come from here will be of the highest level. I am so inspired by my surroundings that it is sure to make it's way more and more into my work. The folks who previously owned the home made furniture here. So there is a history of woodworking surrounding me. Just now it's musical furniture that will be made here. In the same hand made to order fashion.
At the end of this month I have been invited to a guitar summit of sorts in Woodstock NY. We will be joined by Acoustic Guitar Magazine for a meet and greet and discussion on what else but guitars. There will be many prominent makers and musicians that will attend. I look forward to meeting some new people and discussing the future of guitar making even though I live in the past. Two of my instruments will be present for players to try. So for me it will be an exciting time to see their reactions. I will keep you posted about my journey in my next newsletter. And please make sure to check out this month's featured guitar!
So for now it's back to the basics. One guitar at a time. Just like this old house that was made one brick at a time. Designed to weather the ages and hopefully inspire people to believe in themselves and what is possible with just brick, mortar, wood and glue. Hide glue that is.....
